In the summer
of 1999, Ray Rangel contacted his friend Chuck Aguirre
to suggest a reunion
with other friends from the old neighborhood. Chuck mentioned
that most of their friends had served in the military.
Ray’s response
was "We should start a veterans group."
So
this group of old buddies began meeting in the fall of 1999
and talked about starting a veterans’ group. In November, these 12 Mexican American Veterans applied for an AMVETS charter and became AMVETS – Mexican American Veterans Post 5. Ray was unanimously elected as the first Commander of the group. Of the 30 Minnesota AMVETS posts, Post 5 is the only Mexican American group.
Years
ago we were united by similar military experiences. Now we
have an opportunity to share our comradeship while working
to strengthen our support network and continuing to stay involved
and make a difference in our neighborhoods, cities, and state.
In the past five years, we have grown to over 100 members.
We at
Post 5 welcome all veterans from all branches of the military.
Our
dedication is shown by our commitment to support our mission
of remembering the past, living the present, and insuring the
future through
the following objectives.
Objectives
- To
share with pride the achievements of the Mexican Americans
with all other veterans who continue to answer the call in
time of war and peace.
- To
promote awareness of the contributions and sacrifices made
by Mexican American Veterans.
- To
recognize the Mexican American communities in Minnesota.
- To
memorialize the Mexican Americans who defended the freedoms
of our country.
