In 1999, when the
St. Paul veterans began meeting, they talked about
the purpose of their group. Time and time again, the same concepts
came up in their discussions: gathering information about the
Mexican American contributions to the military and to the community,
preserving the memories of those who had served, and sharing
their experiences. As membership grew, they became more active.
They contacted Humboldt High School to sponsor their Junior
ROTC program. In 2002, they started Taco Night at Winner's
Bar & Restaurant
(see Events). And they talked about a memorial
for Mexican American veterans which would also reflect the
diversity on the West Side.
Finally
in December 2003, several veterans went to talk to Mayor Kelly
about the possibility of putting the Mexican American Veterans
Memorial on Harriet Island. With the support of the Mayor,
they formed a memorial committee and thus the idea for Plaza
de Honor was born. Michael Medina, architect and Post 5 member,
designed the memorial with input from the AMVETS Post members and the Memorial Committee.
On May
8, 2004, Mayor Kelly presided over the unveiling of the architect's
rendering of the memorial.
